2014 Our Plan

Glass house

2013. 7/11

We have been doing the hydroponics and making the glass house look beautiful ... fo example taking dead leaves out/off. In the glass house we are growing strawberries, tiny tomatoes, lettuce and marigolds.The marigolds keep the bugs away. The marigolds are not there to look good. They are there to eat, produce and sell.
 Our veggie garden is doing very well. Derek and Joanne water them every day. We are growing lettuce, chives, cabbage, leak and marigolds. We check for diseased and dead leaves regularly. The potatoes are doing really well.
 The raspberry and blueberry plants are flowering and are healthy. When they are ripe we plan to eat them.
On Tuesday Sarah and Joanne are planting basil seeds with Mrs Lowe. On the 22nd we are going to the Feilding Farmers Market to sell walnut crackle. We would love some help to make the walnut crackle this week. Our team player was Derek. He was working well all the time and when he had finished one job he went to another.

Green Finger Zone Opening

On Friday the 27th we had out opening ceremony  for the Green Finger Zone. We shared our glass house and our next steps on what we were going to do. We had MP Mr Mckelvie, Councillor Matt Bell and members from Horizons.
Thank you to all those people who came and joined us for that. We would also like to thank Mrs Lowe for coming up and cutting the ribbon with us.
The strawberries are up and running again after bright fly and they taste good!! We have also planted some more tomatoes.

week 6 update

We had achieved cleaning the glass house and making it look really good at the working bee.
On Wednesday, Mrs Sandbrooke came down and helped us plant some blackcurrants plants. Then we planted some Kowhai seeds  in potting mix. Soon we are going to be making lots of batches of walnut crackle.
We would like to thank Mrs Lowe and Katherine for helping us at the working bee and Mr and Mrs Carter for letting us come over and make signs for our veggie gardens. Also thank you Jess for helping us plant the plants. We really appreciate all the help everyone has put into our school.

Pinata Technology

Our technology challenge was to make a pinata strong, but not so strong that it takes forever to smash and we had to have a place for the lollies ( Derek ).
We had to think about the shape and size to make sure we had enough time; like if we made a big one we would have to use more time.
We had to make sure that it will stay together and hangs up. ( Anneke )
We looked on Google images to find ideas. We found a bee hive and we thought that would be good idea. We started off with a balloon. Then we changed to making rings because we thought it would be bigger. Then we used the rings and paper mache-ed it. It didn't turn out the right shape so we had to kind of adjust it.
The bee hive is a funny shape; like some bits have gone in and it's not quite what we expected. This is because the rings weren't strong enough to hold up the glop (glue) .
We have started painting it and then we will put our bumble bees on that we made of cotton buds and we painted them black and yellow ( Charlotte )

Planting and Crackle!!

We have recently planted 3 kinds of plants in the tyres:- blueberries, raspberries and rhubarb. In the glass house the strawberries are dying  they have white fly.
We have made 3 batches of walnut crackle, testing which temperature is the best. Then after a while, when we know how to make the best crackle, we will start making it ready for week 8 to sell at the Feilding market.

Plan for term 3

In our veggie garden in the middle we are going to have 4 tyres and in them we are going to have raspberries, blackberries, cranberries and rhubarb.  We are going to plant some tomatoes which Anneke is responsible for and the rest of us are going to grow cherry tomatoes, parsley, coriander and basil. We are going to sell our walnut crackle and maybe our pesto at the Feilding market in week 8.

On Monday we planted some Kowhai  in our native area  we got the Kowhai from paper for trees they will be judged for lamb and calf day to find out which one has grown the most.

We have cleaned up the glass house getting the rot and mold from the tomatoes. We have decided to keep the tomatoes going until they  are completely finished. We have also planted runners off the strawberry's some in water some in soil the ones in water died the ones in soil are growing really well. In a couple of weeks we will look at pulling the tomatoes out and having a big clean up.    

 

On Friday we have had a soup day each group made some soup 1 group made pumpkin soup and another group made noddle doddle there were all different kinds of soup we went up to Trishs garden she taught us a bit about all the veges and organic she gave us lots of veges for our soup My whanu group made potato and leak soup.   We had these healthy eating people come to school and they taught us a bit about healthy eating.  we learnt how to read labels  and the food pyramid and
For our hydroponics we are cleaning it out and picking lots of tomatoes we are deciding weather we keep the tomatoes going for the winter.

Zahn is the leader of the hydro rangers for this term I am the leader while Zahn is away we also have Derek,  Sarah and Alex

We have been cleaning the glass house and getting all the dead leaves out from under neath and all the rotten  tomatoes out.
We have planted some strawberry two.
We use the tomatoes and all the herbs for the healthy lunches.

Electives - Term 3

Building / Carpentry

Each Monday for this term we are going to be learning building skills. We have planned some small projects to build such as a toolbox and a pencil case. We will always have an adult supervising and helping with cutting, measuring etc. Thanks to Mike for offering to help. If anyone else has time between 12.45 and 1.15 on a Monday we would love to see you. We have a toolbox plan at school if you would like to see it.
If you have any spare tools at home eg hammers, measuring tape, saws we would really appreciate them as we are starting to put together a school tool box (Charlotte)

Hydroponics - Term 3

We are going to plant some veges in the glasshouse when it gets warmer. We are currently planning what we can plant. (Stanley)
My group is called the Hydro Rangers and we have a glass house.  We grow plants like strawberries.  I look after the berries.  I look after them by feeding them water and nutrients.  I pull the weeds out.  I pull the dead leaves off.  (Alex).
Hydro Rangers take care of veges.  I cleaned the hydroponic house.  I plant strawberries, I look after strawberries.  I'm going to cut the dead leaves off.  (Sarah).

In the next couple of weeks we are going in be
planting vegies and fruit and we are going to keep cutting all of the
dead bits of the plants to keep the bugs away.
We are hoping to learn from the past Hydroponic experts and Mr Sandford. We will be able to do more as it warms up!
